Ass of the Day

I'm in a foul mood this evening.  Where do you even begin?  I know it's early in the season but the state of Mets fans is not good.  Especially considering that murmur of effort at the end of 2007. Excuse those of us who are slightly annoyed.  Do I get frustrated with Ollie Perez for being his usual up and down self?  Or do I get angry with every pulled hamstring I've heard about all season thus far?  Do I get dejected because the Mets are better than these teams on paper?  Wait, I know what to do....

This lackluster weekend of Mets baseball cannot be blamed on anyone member of this team. Tomorrow should be a gleeful off-day considering the outcome of the weekend.  So forget ass of the day...Asses of the weekend goes to the entire roster.  Yes, that includes all of our amigos rehabbing in the Dominican with little umbrellas in their drinks. I need an off-day already. Sad, but true.

Honorable Mentions: Paul LoDuca for being spotted in DC wearing sunglasses at night; The weather is Erie, PA (no offense Zac) for postponing a day of THM.

Let's Go Mets.

Torrealba Deal Falls Apart

The deal was as good as done, news outlets everywhere were reporting that the Mets had signed free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba. And then suddenly, everything fell apart.

The two sides already had agreed on a three-year contract worth $14.4-million and it appeared that the only remaining holdup to an official announcement was a physical.

Mets spokesperson Jay Horowitz spoke about the situation, stating that the Mets had not reached a deal with Torrealba, and there are no current negotiations.

I don't get it, this deal was as good as done, I have a feeling that in the coming days we will know more about why the deal fell through; but at the moment, both the Mets and Torrealba's agent are mum on the issue.

Paging Omar... Now might be a good time to bring LoDuca back, which everyone knows was the right move from the beginning.

Let the Rumors Begin

It's the middle of November, and you know what that means... baseball's Hot Stove season is heating up (no pun intended).

Before we get all the talk of who is a free agent, who is "available", and who can afford the big name players underway, lets take a quick look at some of the current Mets who are free agents this off season.

Free Agents

Moises Alou: In 2006, Mets signed Alou to a one year deal worth $8.5 million, with a $7.5 million option for 2008, which the Mets have already exercised. Alou will be playing for the Mets once again in 2008.

Marlon Anderson: The Mets have signed Anderson to a 2 year contract worth $2.2 million. Anderson will continue to be a clutch bat off the bench for the Mets in 2008.

Luis Castillo: Omar Minaya has said the Mets will do their best to re-sign Castillo, but the Houston Astros have also shown interest, Castillo could receive a 4 year deal, which the Mets are unlikely to match. If the Astros are willing to give a 4 year deal to a 32 year old with knee problems, they can have Castillo.

Ramon Castro: According to the Daily News The Mets have just wrapped up a deal with Castro for 2 years worth just over $4 million. Castro is expected to either backup or split time with Yorvit Torrealba, who the Mets appear to be close to signing.

Jeff Conine: The 41 year old Conine has finally called it a career, retiring after 16 seasons in the majors. Conine was a two time all star, and won two World Series championships with the Florida Marlins.

Damion Easley: The Mets have re-signed Easley to a one year, $950,000 deal. Easley will likely backup for Castillo or Gotay at second base, and will also be used as a pinch hitter.

Tom Glavine: Glavine appears to be headed back to Atlanta to pitch one more year. Glavine has stated that he is willing to take less money to play in Atlanta. The Mets have not shown considerable interest in Glavine.

Shawn Green: It appears the Mets will not exercise their $10 million option on Green, and have shown little interest in bringing him back for 2008. Green may be headed back out to the west coast, where he'll try to hit 3 more home runs to surpass Hank Greenberg and become baseball's All Time Jewish Home Run King. SHALOM.

Brian Lawrence: The Mets have declined Lawrence's $4 Million option for 2008, Lawrence was designated for assignment before the end of last season, and is unlikely to return to the Mets.

Paul LoDuca: After failing to lure Jorge Posada away from the Yankees, the Mets were expected to turn their attention back to LoDuca. Instead, Omar Minaya has focused his sights on Rockies Catcher Yorvit Torrealba. LoDuca's agent has stated that he does not intend to sign with the Mets anytime soon. The LoDuca situation has gone from bad to worse, and now it appears clear that the Mets will not re-sign Loduca

Aaron Sele: Sele filed for free agency last month, he is not expected to return to the Mets. It is possible that he may retire if he is not signed by another team to a major league contract.

Jose Valentin: The Mets have declined their $4.3 Million option on Valentin. He is not expected to resign with the Mets.

Well, there you have it, in the coming weeks, the site will be heating up again, so be sure to check back here as often as possible to get up to the second updates on the Mets progress this off season.

Mets Designate Sandy Alomar Jr. For Assignment

The Mets have DFA'd catcher Sandy Alomar Jr.

Alomar had been with the major league club since Ramon Castro went down last week with arthritis in his back.

With first string catcher Paul LoDuca expected to return to the club for this week's series with the Phillies, the Mets needed to make room on the roster, and it appears the Mets will be sticking with veteran Mike Difelice as the backup catcher until Ramon Castro returns from his stint on the DL.

If Alomar clears waivers, he will most likely return to AAA New Orleans, and will likely rejoin the club in September when rosters expand. Read More...

Castro to the DL

The Mets have placed backup catcher Ramon Castro on the DL retroactive to August 13th. Castro was only supposed to miss a few games, but the arthritis in his back has not improved. With Paul LoDuca also on the DL, this is a huge blow to the Mets, who will be looking to Mike Difelice and Sandy Alomar Jr. to carry the load at catcher for the next week or two.

The injury woes continue for the Mets... Read More...

LoDuca on DL; Castro day-to-day

In a matter of 24 hours, the Mets may find themselves in a bit of a pickle. Following Saturday night's game, Paul LoDuca was placed on the 15-day disabled list. This move being made without an MRI and according to mets.com much to the displeasure of Paul LoDuca. I agree they could have probably waited to make the call on LoDuca, but we're all on the outside looking in. According to ESPN, he will have an MRI on Monday to determine the true extent of his injury.

During today's game, Ramon Castro left the game in the 4th inning due to lower back discomfort. According to a report on ESPN, an MRI revealed mild arthritis. He is listed day-to-day while the team has yet to determine if they will make any other moves. Read More...

Mets Sweep A's

After dropping 6 straight series, the Mets rebounded against the Oakland Athletics this weekend by sweeping the reigning AL West Champions.

In what was an important series for the mets, they outscored Oakland 20-3.

The Starting pitching got back on track with brilliant outings by Tom Glavine, ElDuque and John Maine.

The Hitting got back on track as well, scoring 9 runs in the opener friday and 10 in the series finale on Sunday. They were however shut down by Joe Blanton on Saturday before winning it in the ninth in walk off fashion by a score of 1-0.

However the real story of the series was Paul LoDuca's rampage after home plate umpire Mark Hudson called an outside corner strike on LoDuca to send the count to 0-2. Loduca immediately turned around and vocally expressed his disgust with the call. Loduca, who is especially known for having a good eye at the plate, was subsequently thrown out of the game for arguing balls and strikes. With LoDuca unleashing his evil eyes on Hudson, he went on a tirade as he tried to maneuver around manager Willie Randolph who was trying to protect him. Before leaving the field Loduca threw his bat, helmet, and batting gloves onto the field, which will probably cost him some sort of fine or suspension.

The Mets will look to keep the win streak going against the "World Champion" Cardinals who broke the mets' hearts in last year's NLCS. The Mets Swept the Cards to open the season earlier this year.
