Dontrelle Willis to the Mets?
Sweeny Murti of WFAN just reported that the Tigers have contacted the Mets about Dontrelle Willis, with the idea of spinning him off in a move to dump Willis's $13 Million Dollar Salary.
According to the report, there wasn’t an official offer presented to Omar, but the idea was brought up that the Mets would acquire Willis and Ivan Rodriguez. The Mets would then give up some prospects and would also have to eat the contracts owed to both players. One last hurdle the Mets would have to overcome would be Willis's no-trade clause that would almost certainly require the Mets to give him an extra year.
This might be our only chance at getting someone of Willis's caliber. He has already proven he can do well here (both hitting and pitching) and would be an ideal fit. It also doesn't hurt that Pudge is one of Omar's favorites and Omar has been trying to get him here for years. Who cares about their contracts, just do it already!

Fernando Martinez Out For Season With Hand Injury
Fernando Martinez's season with the Binghamton Mets is over.
Martinez, the B-Mets' 18-year-old center fielder who is considered one of the New York Mets top prospects, will miss the rest of the regular season because of the hand injury that has sidelined him since June.
"He's done for the season," B-Mets manager Mako Oliveras said before Tuesday's game against the Trenton Thunder at NYSEG Stadium.
Martinez, whom Baseball America ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Mets organization, has been on the disabled list since June 27 with what the team has called a right-hand contusion.
In 60 games with the B-Mets this season, Martinez hit .271 with four home runs and 21 RBI. He recorded hits in his last five games with the B-Mets before being placed on the disabled list.

Another one bites the dust. It's always tough to see one of the young prospects go down like this, because you never know how they are going to respond to the injury. A simple injury could hinder a player's growth and advancement. Here's hoping Mr. Martinez comes back as stong as ever next year, and remains the "5 tool" stud that he was projected to be.

Jeff Conine to the Mets?
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Mets are on the verge of acquiring utility player Jeff Conine from the Cincinnati Reds for two Class-A position players.
Conine will serve as a right-handed hitter off the bench, filling in at first base and possibly the outfield, replacing the injured Damion Easley who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with a sprained left ankle.
The Mets pursued Conine before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but he was not considered a top priority at the time.
Conine is batting .265 with six home runs and 32 RBIs in 80 games this season for the Reds.
My question is why? Conine is 41 years old. Is this guy really considered a threat anymore? Sure he will give Delgado some time off against lefties, but there has to better options out there than Jeff Conine....

The Final Minutes
From ESPN.....
Unable to reach agreement on a trade for Chad Cordero, the Mets and Nationals were said to be also talking to the Diamondbacks about a possible three-team deal. According to an official of one team that had spoken with those clubs, the Mets and Nationals ran into a hang-up over the Mets' refusal to include a second prospect in the trade. It's believed that the Mets were willing to trade highly regarded pitching prospect Phil Humber for Cordero, but when they were unable to agree on a second piece, the Nationals sought to expand the deal. However, the official said the Mets were adamant about making a one-for-one swap, so the chances of an expanded deal were described as unlikely.
...
The Gagne sweepstakes was down to the Red Sox and Brewers by Tuesday afternoon. The Yankees and Mets signaled that by turning their attention to other deals, according to executives from multiple teams. The Mets said no on any of their young outfieldes -- Carlos Gomez, Fernando Martinez and Lastings Milledge.
