The Fall of A Star
The dream has ended for the Mets. It's sad since that dream did not really get a chance to blossom. But with the waiving of once highly touted prospect Fernando Martinez, the organization can finally move past what has become a pipe dream.
Signed by Omar Minaya back in 2005 at the age of 16, Fernando was seen as the next great thing, twice being listed as the organization's top prospect by Baseball America. But ever since that point his status within the organization has been on the decline. After an outstanding 2008 season in which he split time between rookie ball and the AA team (hitting .292 and an OPS of .785 along with 8 HR and 43 RBI in 90 games), his skills began to diminish noticeably. Martinez was finally called up during mid-season but was unimpressive during his short 29 game stint in the majors. In 100 plate appearances, Fernando hit just .176 and an .517 OPS with 1 home run and 8 runs batted in. His minor league statistics fared much better (.290 batting average, .877 OPS 8 homers but just 28 RBI's in only 45 games).
Injuries truly began to catch up with Martinez in the 2010 season. Again making a very brief appearance in the majors (only 7 games), he simply could not stay on the field on a consistent basis, and was unimpressive when he was, compiling a .254 batting average with an OPS of .765.
2011 wasn't much better for the former can't miss prospect. Again he missed significant time with a combination of injuries, including a right hamstring strain which has caused him to miss a total of 64 games over the course of three seasons. Hitting .260 and notching a rather mediocre .746 OPS combined with another 8 home runs and 30 RBI's.
It is upsetting to see someone who is still so very young be cut loose without any compensation but because of the chronic injuries and the reported arthritic knees, the move should come as no surprise to Met fans who simply grew tired of waiting for the former blue chip prospect. His talent is still there but there is simply no question that the brightest star in organization has fallen.
UPDATE:
On Wednesday, January 11th Fernando was claimed by the Houston Astros.

Jon Lieber to the Mets?
According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, free agent hurler Jon Lieber is garnering interest from the Royals, Astros, Reds, Mets, and Rangers. Lieber is expected to be ready for Spring Training after a foot injury.
Might be worth the risk, however I don't think he fits the type of player that Omar is looking for.

Mets Sweep Astros; Lower Magic Number to 15
The Mets Completed the 3 game sweep of the Houston Astros today, winning by a score of 4-1. Pedro Martinez pitched well in his Shea debut, pitching 5 innings, giving up no runs on 6 hits, and walking 1 and striking out 4. He also contributed with his bat hitting a double and scoring a run in the 3rd inning.
The Mets outscored the Astros 18-5 in the three game series, and had some impressive outings from Mike Pelfrey who earned his second win of the season on Friday, Tom Glavine who took a perfect game into the 6th inning Saturday, and the aforementioned Pedro Martinez in his Shea debut on Sunday.
The Mets' Magic number is now down to 15. With the Braves and Phillies coming into town this week, the Mets will look for some redemption for last week's now forgotten sweep, one more sweet series against the boys from Atlanta, and will look to seal up the NL East.

Pedro inching closer
All indications suggest Pedro will make at least one more rehab start, most likely in Florida, before returning to New York. If that is the case, keep your eye on the home series against the Astros. That may be the weekend we see a Pedro return.

Ramon Castro To Leave Mets at the End of the Season?
Castro is a free agent after this year. With 9 homeruns in 124 ABs for the Mets this year, Castro could move to the front of a weak class of catchers. Assuming Jorge Posada and Ivan Rodriguez never hit the open market, that leaves Castro, Michael Barrett, Paul Lo Duca, and Jason Kendall.
Castro signed for $850K last winter to again serve as Paul Lo Duca's backup. Lo Duca hasn't been healthy or hitting, and Castro's having his best season with an .889 OPS.
In 119 games as a Met, Castro has a .255/.324/.455 line with 21 HR in 459 ABs. One has to wonder if he could do that in a single season. If so, he'd be one of the better catchers available. In the past, Castro has shown the ability to throw out 30%+ of would-be basestealers. However, he's nailed just two of 25 this year. Mets fans - what's up with that?
Teams like the Devil Rays, Mets, Cubs, Astros, and Padres may all be looking for catchers this winter. Castro should get consideration as a regular, and might be a decent buy at two years, $8MM or so.
