-A thought about the Mets and their bench players who got playing time tonight against the Braves:
In a season that is basically out of reach, tryouts for the 2010 season are in session for next year's bench/spot start position players. Players like Wilson Valdez and Andy Green have been called up to come off the bench and show off their talent. Valdez went 2-4 tonight with 2 runs scored and Green went 1-2. Green made an error in the 9th on a ground ball that ate him up. Valdez played 2 positions before the night was over. The question in not the talent of these two but the age. Wilson Valdez at the age of 31 and Andy Green at the age of 32 don't have much of a future on the Mets considering the level that they play at (compared to an older, yet very talented Gary Sheffield or Alex Cora). My question is why minor league players like Argenis Reyes, Nick Evans, and Jonathan Malo are not getting a chance to play in the majors before September callups. Of course contracts have everything to do with the decisions made but if stats, style of play, and age were the only considerations, who would really be getting a chance on the Mets right now? Wilson Valdez has been hot of late at the plate and has hit .298 in 36 games with Buffalo. Before that though, Valdez hit .198 in 41 games with the Columbus Clippers. Also he was not quite the offensive force you'd want off a bench in his stint with the Mets previous this year. Andy Green suffered an injury this year and has managed to deal alright with the bat hitting .270 with Buffalo. Jonathan Malo offers 3 potential positions (2B, 3B, and SS) Argenis Reyes 2 positions (2B and SS) and Nick Evans a few positions (LF RF 1B and perhaps 3B). All three of these guys offer a younger talent with bigger potential. However, Evans has had an atrocious year at the plate and Malo has been demoted to AA from AAA. None of these players offer a huge offensive force but Nick Evans could in the future as seen this year in Spring Training. Thoughts? Comments welcome here or on my twitter page, twitter.com/kmosk3.
