Mets Happy to Leave the Rockies

“Borrowing” the idea from Abby, I’ve decided to review the Mets-Rockies series by the numbers. Here is how the two teams compared during the three-game series.

-The Rockies outscored the Mets 34-12

-The Rockies had 47 base hits to the Mets’ 27

-Mets’ starters averaged just over four and one-third innings per start. The Rockies got nearly seven innings per start during the series.

-The Rockies’ bullpen allowed four earned runs. Mets’ relievers were responsible for seven.

-19 batters reached first via base on balls for the Rockies. That’s right…19. Colorado pitchers were only responsible for four.

Sadly the only thing the Mets “won” at throughout the series was men left on base. The Rockies stranded far more runners than the Mets. Of course this is largely in part to the fact that Colorado out-hit the Mets by 20 and scored more than 20 runs than their adversary. Leaving men on base is inevitable when base hits are coming by the handful. Mathematical odds dictate that the Rockies had to make three outs an innings eventually. It just so happened that at least one guy was most likely on base when it finally came to pass.

To say that this series was painful to watch would be quite the understatement.

It’s the opinion of many of the Met faithful that John Maine was snubbed by not receiving a spot on the NL All-Star roster. If ever there was a night for the Maine event to prove he belongs to be mentioned among elite pitchers in the National League tonight’s match-up in Houston against 1-3 Jason Jennings would be it. Hopefully Maine can stop the bleeding and tonight’s game against the Astros will be the first step to a series win before the break.

One final note: The Mets have dropped four straight and, as always, many fans are becoming unglued. For all the stats I mentioned above there is one rather important one that I left out;

-The Mets are still three games ahead of the second place Braves in the NL East.

Breathe, everybody. Breathe.
