After tonights game, as far as I'm concerned the season is over...

There's no way Pelfrey is gonna beat Webb tomorrow, and we'll be lucky if Santana can beat Haren on Thursday...

This whole season has been a joke, every single player except for Wagner has seriously underperformed, Willie has made every mistake possible along the way, and everytime we get teased by winning a few games we always find a way to come back and screw it up

Whenever we score a bunch of runs early, our offense gives up and doesn't get a hit for the last 6 innings of the game, whenever our pitching is un-hittable our batters get shutout by some nobody rookie making his second career start, then when we score 7 runs in a game, our starter throws 100 pitches in 3 innings walking 9 and giving up 8 runs. I'm sick and tired of seeing this night in and night out.

There is one word that sums up this whole season... inconsistency... the Mets never do what they need to do when they need to... and there's no reason to think any of that is going to change, 2008 is over time to start thinking about 2009.

There are a number of viable candidates for today's ass of the day...or even ass of the past two days. Matt Wise, Aaron Heilman, Willie's fat trap, Yunel Escobar's Knee, Alou's Calf...etc. You get the point. I'm done honoring Heilman with ass of the day.  He gets the lifetime ass-chievement award. It's pathetic. The fact that Alou strained his calf muscle by merely breathing and is not optimistic about should be our first clue that 2008 is turning into a very cruel joke.

According to numerous reports, Moises Alou could be back with the team as soon as this weekend. He went 3-3 in a rehab game over the weekend.

As you all know, he is recovering from a hernia suffered during Spring Training. We'll have to wait and see if he actually returns this weekend. Read More...

Some nights it's time to drop the funny business.  Thank god the Mets won that game tonight. For the sake of Carlos Beltran & Aaron Heilman...it's a good damn thing they won that game.

Well ladies and gentlemen it is April in Queens, and as usual optimism is in the air at Shea Stadium. In our season opener, Johan Santana looked great, D-Dubs was hitting the ball, and all were happy in Mets world. Then yesterday came about, and we got our smack back down to reality.

Pedro Martinez trotted out to the mound for his first start of the season, and by the mid way point of last nights game cemented his place with Moises Alou as the most worthless member of the New York Metropolitans baseball squad. What we all saw coming happened in the bottom of the fourth inning at Dolphin Stadium last night in Miami. On a routine ground ball, Pedro managed to find a way to get hurt and get himself taken out of the game. Which I was alright with, because he looked like complete garbage.

So in the next day or two we will be hearing MRI results, and that Pedro will most likely miss the first two months of the season, because he is useless. Pedro then will fly down to some small minuscule Spanish island, meet up with his just as useless buddy Alou, and begin the healing process (and by healing I mean margaritas).

Now I know that most Mets fans have this awesome hard on for Moises Alou, but I for the life of me cannot figure out why. From April to July the man is harder to find then the Ultimate Warrior at a wrestling match. I don't care how good you are when you're healthy, if you only play less then half a season. That my friends is what I call counter production, and last time I checked counter production does not lead to World Championships. You know what is going to be awesome though, when Captain Useless is ready to return in July and Angel Pagan is hitting like .300 (that's right I said it) we're going to welcome him back with open arms. I have a better idea, release him, and let's just rid ourselves of the problem.

The same goes for Martinez. He is most likely going to be injured for a while now, because he is old and his bones and muscles don't heal so well. So you know what I say, deal him back to Boston and let him waste away in injured mediocrity up there. Plus his heart is still in Boston anyways (less we forget the inter league disaster of 2006).

So let's review and compare. We have two injured Hispanic men who spend most of their summers on a beach rather than a ball field. When they play they are solid, but they never play. They are an asset to this team...how? Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the two most useless men on the New York Mets since the Greg Jefferies/Jeff Innis era. It's the middle of November, and you know what that means... baseball's Hot Stove season is heating up (no pun intended).

Before we get all the talk of who is a free agent, who is "available", and who can afford the big name players underway, lets take a quick look at some of the current Mets who are free agents this off season.

Free Agents

Moises Alou: In 2006, Mets signed Alou to a one year deal worth $8.5 million, with a $7.5 million option for 2008, which the Mets have already exercised. Alou will be playing for the Mets once again in 2008.

Marlon Anderson: The Mets have signed Anderson to a 2 year contract worth $2.2 million. Anderson will continue to be a clutch bat off the bench for the Mets in 2008.

Luis Castillo: Omar Minaya has said the Mets will do their best to re-sign Castillo, but the Houston Astros have also shown interest, Castillo could receive a 4 year deal, which the Mets are unlikely to match. If the Astros are willing to give a 4 year deal to a 32 year old with knee problems, they can have Castillo.

Ramon Castro: According to the Daily News The Mets have just wrapped up a deal with Castro for 2 years worth just over $4 million. Castro is expected to either backup or split time with Yorvit Torrealba, who the Mets appear to be close to signing.

Jeff Conine: The 41 year old Conine has finally called it a career, retiring after 16 seasons in the majors. Conine was a two time all star, and won two World Series championships with the Florida Marlins.

Damion Easley: The Mets have re-signed Easley to a one year, $950,000 deal. Easley will likely backup for Castillo or Gotay at second base, and will also be used as a pinch hitter.

Tom Glavine: Glavine appears to be headed back to Atlanta to pitch one more year. Glavine has stated that he is willing to take less money to play in Atlanta. The Mets have not shown considerable interest in Glavine.

Shawn Green: It appears the Mets will not exercise their $10 million option on Green, and have shown little interest in bringing him back for 2008. Green may be headed back out to the west coast, where he'll try to hit 3 more home runs to surpass Hank Greenberg and become baseball's All Time Jewish Home Run King. SHALOM.

Brian Lawrence: The Mets have declined Lawrence's $4 Million option for 2008, Lawrence was designated for assignment before the end of last season, and is unlikely to return to the Mets.

Paul LoDuca: After failing to lure Jorge Posada away from the Yankees, the Mets were expected to turn their attention back to LoDuca. Instead, Omar Minaya has focused his sights on Rockies Catcher Yorvit Torrealba. LoDuca's agent has stated that he does not intend to sign with the Mets anytime soon. The LoDuca situation has gone from bad to worse, and now it appears clear that the Mets will not re-sign Loduca

Aaron Sele: Sele filed for free agency last month, he is not expected to return to the Mets. It is possible that he may retire if he is not signed by another team to a major league contract.

Jose Valentin: The Mets have declined their $4.3 Million option on Valentin. He is not expected to resign with the Mets.

Zac posting on a Wednesday? Whatever is the cause? Well, my beloved readers, it is because I have a free moment and I want to touch base about last night's come-from-behind victory. That and, due to a busy schedule at work over the next two days and the fact that the wife and I are heading back to Erie this weekend I may once again miss my Friday post. I know; you're all pretty upset.

I've been on the Padres' bandwagon all season long as I've declared them the team to beat both in the National League West and in the NL Wild Card race. Despite what too many people who read this blog may think the Padres are a good team and are dangerous when playing at home. With that being said it was very fulfilling to watch the Mets come back last night.

Two thoughts have been running through my mind about last night's game.

Just how angry were the fans at Shea last night after the sixth and seventh innings? I have to say that I loved to hear the crowd get that fired up about the Mets' bullpen giving up the lead. Yes, I am that guy who gets loud and boos when the team that I pay money to see is stinking up the joint. I would much rather listen to a stadium that is passionate about the hometown team than be in a place where everybody is sitting on their hands and quietly watching another loss.

Will Carlos Beltran keep this up for the rest of the season? Caros had five RBIs last night, including a two-run shot in the first. In his last six games Beltran is hitting .435 with four homers, 13 RBIs, and a slugging percentage of 1.087. Oh yeah. His on-base percentage has been .517.

Yes.

In a season where many of us were ready to officially declare Beltran's new coming-to-the-plate music be Don't Let Me Down (myself included) Carlos has been coming up big recently. Beltran's bat is the spark that this offense needs heading into October. Ask yourself this question: Do you really want the Mets' offense relying on Moises Alou? Keep it up, Carlos.

Too many times this season the Mets have followed up an emotional victory with a lame-duck performance the next night. It's Brian Lawrence (1-0, 5.06 ERA) against the Padres' Jake Peavy (13-5, 2.19 ERA. No, that's not a typo). This may not necessarily be the match-up Mets' fans want to see but it's games like these where the home-field advantage come into play. That is, if the game doesn't get rained out. There is a large majority of the staff at Global NYM not fortunate enough to attend Mets games on a regular basis, including myself. So when you decide to go to Shea you usually pick the game in advance and hope for a good one. Last night, I got lucky...again.

A year ago I was caught the game against the Cardinals in which the Mets staged that ridiculous comeback that was completed by Beltran's walk-off. Last night was just as good. Next week I'll be back on a more serious note. Today I'm on a bit of a time crunch with some sketchy free interent. So here's a few thoughts from my night at Shea...

There was a guy in the section next to me who became frustrated in the 9th when Wagner loaded the bases. At one of those moments when it's relatively quiet, he stood up and billowed, "CAN ANYONE PITCH ON THIS TEAM?!!" That's exactly what I felt at that moment.

The amount of boos last night were incredibly misdirected by those in attendance. Booing Sosa and Wagner was not really that necessary.

The weather was beyond disgusting. If we would have lost that game, it would not have made me happy that I sat in the rain to also lose feeling in my toes.

The Mets powers that be tried to convince me that last night's attendance was approx. 48, 000. Were you watching? There were not 48, 000 seats filled. It's too bad though...they missed a good one.

Excuse me Mr. Vendor...the pretzels at Shea are not slammin', jammin'. Yes those are the exact words he used.

Who is this guy named Carlos Beltran? And where was he from April until August? Stellar night from Beltran after being named NL Player of the Week.

If Castillo had not earned his full set of stripes after his big hit against Atlanta, then he is now officially outfitted in the orange and blue.

If you have too many drinks from a pineapple while in the Dominican Republic, you too may be able to belly flop like Moises Alou.

It felt like I was watching a different team at times last night. They fought back, at home, and refused to die last night. The pitching was mediocre again, but this team finally flexed it's offensive muscles. Hopefully the Mets can keep building the momentum and get into a real nice groove heading down the stretch. Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran, fresh off the DL, has been named the Bank of America Player of the Week for the week of August 13th-19th.

Beltran went 9 for 24 (.375) with 4 home runs and led the league with 10 RBIs. Beltran won the award earlier in the year, after his hot start in April.

Beltran beat out his fellow teammates David Wright and Moises Alou who also had big weeks for the Mets.

Hopefully the Mets' hot hitting will continue, as they will be facing San Diego's aces Jake Peavy and Chris Young this week. Read More...

With some shuffling of the lineup and getting everyone healthy, the Mets may finally have everything they need to play some good baseball. The bullpen will hold its own and if Beltran can stay healthy and find ways to produce, Mets fan may be able to sleep better at night.

One of the most needed lineup changes has come with Willie giving Lastings Milledge more playing time. I have never been crazy about Milledge, but it has been obvious that he needs to play. Shawn Green is probably at the end of his road, which is unfortunate, but that's the way the game goes. Milledge provides this team with much needed youth and defense, while Green has proved to be a liability for the Mets is every sense. Let me add, I really have no idea what the Mets expected out of Green is signing him last August. From '98-'02 he put up significant power numbers and have seen an incredible drop-off since. I know the Mets had a hole to fill in RF last summer, yet all he has provided is a random 4-4 day, awkward belly flops, and a flying hat. Hopefully, Milledge will embrace this opportunity to prove himself to this organization once and for all.

Yesterday I posted an update on Pedro's 2nd rehab start and although all of us have been warned some Mets fans still believe that Pedro is going to come back and be a savior for this ball club. Do not hold your breath friends...you may end up turning blue. If Pedro continues to progress, he will be at best an average pitcher when he returns. The energy that is Pedro should be a shot in the arm if he returns to New York, but he will not be a front end starter who will go deep into games. If he can provide the Mets will quality starts during the stretch run, that would be a success for this season. Expecting too much from Pedro Martinez may only be setting yourself up for disappointment.

Moises Alou used to make me see red. While he was injured, his status was always the biggest mystery of the early summer. What's even better is that while we have no idea if he would return this century, the Mets tease me on the scoreboard with "Moises Alou's favorite vacation spot in the Dominican Republic." Well, that's nice Mo, but could you find your way back to NY? Thankfully he did, and I take back any anger I had towards him in June. If he stays healthy and continues to come up in clutch situations, I am officially an idiot.

Last but not least, some red flags. I still have faith in John Maine and Oliver Perez, but there is some concern regarding these 2 young arms. John Maine has never thrown this many innings, and should we get to the postseason, I don't know if we'll see the Maine of last October. Oliver Perez could be suffering from fatigue as well, yet he has some more experience from his time in Pittsburgh. The Mets do not have the luxury of rest their starters as they did last August with a 15 game lead. These kids need to dig deep and come up big for the Mets as we head for the home stretch.

Since returning from the DL on July 27th, Moises Alou is batting .296 with 5 home runs, 10 RBIs and 9 runs scored in only 54 at bats. Since returning Alou has an OBP of .371, and a slugging percentage of .611!!!

Over the last six weeks, us Mets fans have suffered as our beloved Mets have played .500 baseball, and have gone up and down like a roller coaster at Six Flags. It seems like ever since Delgado hit that walk-off off of Armando Benitez in the last week of May, Benitez formulated a curse in which the Mets would not be able to hit in a clutch spot. Of course, I am just looking for a scapegoat and still have the optimism like Willie does, and there is reasoning behind my optimism.

After this tough west coast swing, we have seven games against the Pirates and Nationals. This would be the perfect time to get going, as the dog days of August are approaching quickly. Also, during these seven games we will see the return of Moises Alou (Remember him?), who should give the Mets, as Mike Francessa said, "The Big Bat" that they need. With Alou coming back, this means Lastings Milledge will platoon with Shawn Green in right, and hopefully light a fire under him, and increase his production.

I would be extremely SHOCKED if within the three-week period Alou comes back, the Mets didn't go on a massive tear, especially with Delgado (yes Delgado) hitting over .350 in July. Winning ten out twelve games is not out of the question once Alou returns, and a win streak like that is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Now that the all star game is over, the Mets can settle into playing everyday again after their layoff. With the season more than half over, here begins the stretch run towards the playoffs. That first step in the stretch run is the trading deadline where teams can wheel and deal in attempts to make their team better, without having players pass through the waiver wire. Mets fans can remember numerous deadline deals made over the last several years including the infamous Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano deal (Kazmir is free in 2011 and a Boras client for those of you wondering.).

The most important thing for any team this time of year is to figure out whether or not you want to be a buyer or a seller. Obviously, the Mets are in a position to be a buyer whether that means acquiring a starting pitcher, reliever, or corner outfielder. This trading deadline is trickier than normal though. First off, we have several ballplayers that are coming back momentarily in the pitching and outfield department. For example, even though we were in a pinch for starting pitching before the all star break, Oliver Perez and Jorge Sosa are due to be activated shortly after the all star break. With Pedro Martinez starting his rehab assignment shortly, that will be adding a boost to the rotation. Hopefully, since Martinez is coming back that means that Scott Schoenweis is shown the door.

The outfield is another tough area right now to decide upon. Gomez, Alou, Chavez, and Milledge are all in the wings. Gomez is the farthest off as he probably won’t be seen until the early part of September. However, Alou and Milledge should be back shortly with Chavez coming back within the next few weeks. Do we continue to wait around? It’s inevitable that the surplus of outfielders and pitchers will happen, but how patient can we be?

So what is the answer to these questions? Nobody really knows but the Mets general manager Omar Minaya. I am positive that Omar is on the phone seeing who is available with regards to keeping Pelfrey and Humber. It should be an interesting next 3 weeks for Mets fans, especially if we become consistent.
