The Interlocking NY
Our friends over at Mets Police really got me thinking Mets fans...
I've always been a big fan of the Mets interlocking NY logo. You'll notice it appears in the top corners of this website. I like it much better than the logo used by that other team in New York, but I digress.
The other day, Shannon came across some photos from the Mets equipment truck showing the interlocking NY logo where the outlined Y clearly overlays the outlined N.
At first I didn't think much of it, figuring it had been used before. As it turns out Shannon was able to track down some older photos with the same logo.
Typically, whenever the NY logo is used it appears that the N and the Y are on the same plane as seen here. Notice that this is the case regardless of the color pattern or outline and drop shadow used.
The only place the NY logo appears is on the Mets caps. (although the old Mets patch did have the tiny NY on it). I took a look at my collection of Mets hats the other day and was shocked to find something I had never noticed before...
Since the logos on the caps are stitched on, the N and the Y are not in the same plane. On most hats, the Y clearly overlays the N, as seen here, here and here.
But as it turns out, sometimes this is not the case...
Some caps, clearly show the N overlaying the Y... here and here.
It gets better... I came across an older black cap (black bill) that I own which shows the Y on top of the N on both vertical ends of the N, but the N on top of the Y at the diagonal. Seen here...
I can't believe I've never noticed this before, but it leads me to wonder have the on field hats always used the Y over N logo, or did they ever wear caps with the alternate NY logos? My guess is that the alternates have only been put on replica hats, and the fans have just never noticed.

The Patch
The Mets new "inaugural season" patch has officially become the laughing stock of baseball the last few days. Mets Police points out that Yahoo Sports' mockery of the patch was the second hottest URL according to Alexa.com yesterday.
All this pretty much started last Friday (although Metsblog, as usual, was on top of it before national sources caught wind) when ESPN Page 2 contributor Paul Lukas of Uniwatch blog called the patch "the worst sleeve patch in MLB history". Honestly, how could anyone in their right mind disagree with this statement.
Obviously the new patch is a play off of the original crappy Citifield patch, which the Mets have plastered all around "taxpayer field" for the past year. But even that design was mocked when it was first introduced.
Seriously what designer collected a nice fat check for designing this worthless piece of crap? Can I have that job? I'm certainly no logo designer, but in 5 minutes I'm sure I could come up with something better... like this...
I'd sell this logo to the Mets for 1/10 of whatever they payed the designer of the patch, the fans probably wouldn't bitch about it, and the rest of the world would laugh at it.

Shea It Ain't So!
From J Soul (My Personal Blog):
Last night, I finally got a look at the new logo for CitiField (The new stadium for the New York Mets opening in 2009). Before I make any obscene gestures, let me say that I was really disappointed when I saw the logo. The only way to logo relates to the Mets, in my own opinion, is the orange and blue color scheme. Other than that, it looks pretty terrible. Can anyone tell me who created the logo? Who do I have to hunt down and yell at? Now, while I made some obscene gestures at my computer screen, make your own gestures at the logo of the new stadium of the New York Mets.
Isn’t it lovely?… (Insert groans and whines here)
You know, it reminds me of another logo that I see all over the place… hmm… what could it be… Maybe it’s a ticket stub? Maybe it’s a Domino?… Wait! A domino! That’s why it looks like…
I’m proud to be a Mets fan, but I’m certainly no fan of Citifield… yet.
I’m gonna miss Shea Stadium...
